The proposed Moorside nuclear power station in Cumbria was a major infrastructure project with significant potential economic and social impacts. Cumbria County Council required expert advice to appraise the project and ensure that local communities and businesses could benefit while mitigating risks.
Hardisty Jones was appointed to provide socio-economic support to WSP in its assessment of the proposals, to support Cumbria County Council in its appraisal of the project.
Hardisty Jones reviewed socio-economic documents that were prepared in support of the project and made suggestions on how these could be improved and enhanced, including proposals for mitigation actions. This work included:
- Analysis of the workforce requirement for the construction of a new nuclear power station at Moorside, including the local sourcing of workers and the need for migrant workers, and subsequent need for accommodation for them.
- Proposals for a workforce development strategy.
- Analysis of the Preliminary Environmental Information Report (PEIR), and suggestions on how this could be improved.
- Review of proposals for local supply chain engagement and proposals for a supply chain engagement strategy.
- Review of proposals for maximising the legacy of the project in Cumbria.
